The worse you feel, the slower time passes. In a way, America has been suffering from the election flu. The Election Flu season started about 100 years ago (or so it seems) and keeps getting worse and worse. But, hope is just around the corner.

Tuesday, November 4th is election day. That's right, it is time for us to get off of our "sick" beds and go to vote. The prediction I heard today was that 90% of the registered voters would vote. So expect long lines and be patient.

There have been two election related trends that have reared their ugly heads this year--both of which relate directly to the church. First, there was a national move to get pastor's to endores candidates from the pulpit. I don't believe that is appropriate. I believe that worship is a time we are to praise and glorify God. To talk partisan politics during worship shifts the focus from God to us--and that's just not right. Also, when a pastor speaks from the pulpit during a sermon, he or she is speaking on behalf of God. And personally, I don't think any pastor is knowledgible enough to say who God supports in any given election. The pastor is endorsing who he or she supports, but is then giving the supposed backing of God to that choice. Whether liberal or conservative, that isn't right.

Now, in response to that, some say that church and politics shouldn't mix. I disagree with that. I believe that the church has a role in educating the people about issues and encouraging them to vote. And when it comes to local, grass roots problems, we have an obligation to work with our neighbors to try and make our part of the city better--that means through politics. But it should always be issue oriented and never partisan.

The second trend I have noticed is forwarded e-mail that say to pray to God so that Candidate X will win (because we all know that all "good" Christians support Candidate X and God supports him/her too). The problem, of course, is that not all Christians support the same candidate and again, I can't pretend to know with certainty that God supports Candidate X. By praying for a specific candidate, I believe that we are potentially praying against the will of God! That's what happens if God just happens to support Candidate Y. And the idea that we are praying for something counter to the will of God bothers me.

Instead, I would encourage you to pray for wisdom, that you might fully know God's will. And then remember the words of the Lord's Prayer--"Thy Will Be Done". Pray that way. And then maybe you can pray that the Lord will use whomever we elect. That He will open their heart to his leading and that they (our elected leaders) might always focus on how we, as a nation, can be more Christ-like in how we govern our nation.

And the last thing to think about is the possibility that God doesn't support either candidate for office (or any of the 3rd party candidates, as well). God sees the big picture and is waiting for us to do the right thing--which is to seek his will and vote accordingly. And remember, no matter who wins on November 4th, God will still be God and we will be His children!

Rainy Days

www.ridgecrestumc.com

It is Friday and I am setting at my desk watching the rain drops run down my window. I normally take Friday off, but I was supposed to be working with the youth today--we were scheduled to finish painting the house of a neighborhood family. But when I went to my car at 7:30 this morning, the dark clouds were rolling in and I knew painting was out of the question. So, this morning I have worked in the office, getting the newsletter ready and reconnecting with my blog.

I haven't written much in the last few months. I have been too busy. I am involved with lots of groups outside the church (CUP, IAF, SOS, etc.) and I am working with the youth (something I think may have to change). Not only that, we have had three deaths in the last 6 weeks (4 if you include a member that lived in another state). I jokingly said last Sunday that "No one is allowed to die". I had a member suggest that I add the caveat that you can only die once you have gotten 2 new members to take your place! I think I like that idea!

But as I sit and watch the dark clouds roll by, I am reminded that life doesn't function on my schedule. Just because I wanted to get the painting done today, doesn't mean it has to happen. Just because I want to have a break from funerals, doesn't mean it is going to happen. I have to learn to be flexible. Sometimes life runs on our time table--and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe I am like everyone else...I need to let go and let God have control. Maybe I needed a rainy day to get caught up in the office and then to rest my weary body and soul.

When life doesn't work out the way we want, we are called to do one thing--

TO RESPOND "BLESSED BE YOUR NAME!"

Clink on this link to hear it for yourself: Blessed Be Your Name

Working Together

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Working Together
Who is that bald man who is the new Executive Director of the Oklahoma City Cooperative Urban Parish? Well, according to the story in the CONTACT, that would be me!

I have been involved in the parish almost since the first week I arrived at Ridgecrest. Myrtle Clingenpeel took me to an evening meeting at a Methodist church in south OKC and I was hooked. Having just arrived in the urban setting, it was important for me to have a relationship with other pastors and laypersons who had experience. I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel—I wanted to learn from the experience of others. Also, I needed their support and encouragement.

Now, 10 years later, I am the one with experience and encouragement. Outside of a few pastor (both Senior Pastors and Associates) in large churches, I have more urban experience than almost any other pastor in OKC or Tulsa (in the UMC). When CUP was floundering and looking for leadership, I believed that God was calling me to share my experience with others. That is why I stepped up to take over as Executive Director of CUP.

I am committed not just to the organization, but to the ideal that it represents. I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ works better when we work together than when we work separately. That principal has lead to our involvement with Streets of Shalom (the interdenominational group of churches that minister in our neighborhood) and with the new community organizing project lead by IAF. The strength of togetherness is what motivates me to work to establish a relationship with St. Andrew’s UMC in south OKC (a relationship that hasn’t been fully established just yet, but that is still on the burner). It is also why I am currently working with other UM churches in our area to develop joint ministries. While one of us alone might not be able to have a strong program (take youth, for example), four churches working together can afford and support a strong program.

The writer of Ecclesiastes recognized the value of togetherness when he wrote in the 4th chapter:

9Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work:

10 If one falls down,
his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
and has no one to help him up!

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

May the Lord, working through us and other churches, create cords that cannot be broken!

FYI

www.ridgecrestumc.com

The following is an article that was published in the CONTACT--the newsletter of the Oklahoma Conference of the UMC

Tremper is the full-time executive director of Skyline Urban Ministry.

One of Hill’s duties will be to conduct a fall fund-raising campaign, focused in October, as the Parish seeks to re-establish its financial base. The executive committee hopes to raise enough funds for a paid part-time directorship.

Planned activities include: a Parish worship service in September, a Parish mission event in October, and the funding drive.

The Parish members also continue efforts to develop an urban internship program, in cooperation with leaders of the Wimberly School of Religion, Oklahoma City University, and Saint Paul School of Theology.

Hill will work for CUP from his current office at OKC-Ridgecrest UMC.

"It is an honor to be named the executive," Hill said about his role with CUP. "I am merely the latest in a line of directors who have sought to do God’s will in this urban area of Oklahoma City. I pray that I might live up to the tradition and spirit of those leaders."

He explained, "The cooperative ministries are intended to renew congregations, build community in the Parish area, and change and improve the lives of people in the area."

He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. Well, OK, it wasn't quite that fast, but it was awfully quick. It seemed like as soon as I returned home, I started hacking and coughing, my nose running and my throat hurting. Then I started wheezing when I coughed. For me, that means asthmatic bronchitis and it isn't fun. My biggest problem was that I didn't sleep well and I got run down. I thought my life was over! Almost!

During this time of illness, I did two funerals. Both were women in the congregation who were more advanced in years. One was 96 and the other was almost 90. Both were active and vibrant right up to the end. Both were diagnosed with advanced cancer and declined to have treatment. Both died after a very short "illness". While I know it might seem a strange thing to say, but I think both of them were blessed. Both lived their life to the fullest on their own terms. They both lived long, full lives right up to the end. Both had the potential to suffer a great deal of pain during a protracted illness. But both died rather quickly and peacefully. I would say that is a blessing.

And for those of us left behind, it is a reminder. The life we live is precious. Even when we are sick with the flu or some other illness, we need to remember that every day we have is a gift from God. When our heads hurt from congestion and our chests hurt from coughing, we should remember that our bodies are wonderful temples that have been designed and built by God. And when we are grumpy and don't feel like being social--even with our families--we need to remember that the relationships we have and the love that we share is a gift from God. We love because He first loved us! Don't take it for granted. Don't take any of it for granted! Life is too precious! Live every day to the fullest--until you are 90 or 96 and it is time to return to the Father. Until then, carpe diem--sieze the day!

More Notes from Swamp Land

www.ridgecrestumc.com

It has been a looooooonnnnnggggg day. The home had a three panel sliding glass door in the front (a garage that had been enclosed). One of the panels had broken. We pulled the door out, framed up the wall, put in a new standard size door and put new plywood on the outside. We didn't get the exterior siding up, but it was a good days work for us.

The owner of the home--her name is Lena--came and helped us a little bit today. She certainly knows how to swing a hammer. She is a very cheerful, positive person that appreciates all that we do. She won't be with us tomorrow. She works all day and then has "stuff" at her church all evening. Man, does that sound familiar. Even in the midst of disaster response, church life continues.

A funny story. Lynn and I rode back with Harry today. I was sitting in the front passenger seat. My butt kept feeling warm and actually began to sweat. I started thinking that I had a fever and it was showing up in my posterier. I finally asked Harry if they had heated seats. They did!!! And Carol loves to use it and leaves it on. Boy, was I glad to hear that.

I am so tired, I will be in bed early and I am quite certain I will sleep like a log. Pray for us, that tomorrow might be as good a day as today.

Jim of the Warm Butt

Notes from Swamp Country

www.ridgecrestumc.com

We have arrived at Lake Charles. We actually are staying at Moss Bluff, which is just across the river (more like a swamp), from LC. We live in an old Middle School. The dorms are OK, but the showers/bathrooms are pretty primitive. Oh, well, we all have our cross to bare.

We went to church yesterday (a lesson in Ridgecrest appreciation), ate some good seafood and did some shopping (for food). Then we got to visit our work site. We are working on a house in Fenton, about 20 miles from where we stay. The home belongs to a single mother whose son is in college. She had serious roof damage during the hurricane. FEMA came in and tarped the roof, but the tarping material was super thin. It melted in the heat and then the rain messed up all of the inside. We are taking out a sliding glass door and framing up a new standard door. Also gutting and redoing a bath. Then lots of painting and a little drywalling. The foreman said he thought we would be there 2 or 3 days and then move to another site. I think that we will be lucky if we get this project finished. I hope that we can git'r done. The owner has been living in a FEMA trailer (about 8'x20') for almost 3 years. If God blesses us with success, she will be able to move back in by the end of the week.

More later.

Jim (it is bad when you haven't written in so long that you can't remember how to log in to your own blog page!!!!!)

Good DNA

www.ridgecrestumc.com

At a conference a few weeks ago, I heard a presenter talk about churches that had "good" DNA and others that had "bad" DNA. Of course, since is church is not a living organism, it doesn't have DNA in the scientific sense. But each church is the living embodiment of Christ and thus has a spiritual DNA--some good, some bad.

"Bad" DNA was defined as a church that is inward focused. It has a country club mentality and its only mission is to attract members who are just like those that already populate the pews. Needless to say, they tend to be cold and unwelcoming of strangers, especially if the stranger isn't "just like us".

A church with "Good" DNA is mission focused. Rather than worry about survival, they care about carrying out God's will for their church. They do all in their power to proclaim the Gospel and make disciples for Jesus Christ. They know that everyone is in need of God's saving grace, so they are open and accepting of everyone who comes through the door. They may struggle with the choices people have made in their life, but they don't judge and they try to never let their negative opinions come to the surface. They are welcoming and hospitable to everyone. Everyone is welcome and has a place in the "family of faith".

Granted, no church is totally "bad" and no church is totally "good". But when the bad outweighs the good, the DNA is in need of a mutation. I heard two stories this week. One was from a lay person who said the church they had been attending hadn't been very welcoming. The other was a pastor who said he was constantly having to remind his congregation that they needed to be welcoming and hospitable. Obviously, there are two churches that might have "bad" DNA.

At Ridgecrest, I believe that we have "good" DNA. Not everyone is warm and welcoming. Those who are more than make up for the few that aren't. I think our "good" DNA is demonstrated by the number of visitors that choose to return. We do a pretty good job of making new people feel like they are a part of our family. Are we perfect? Absolutely not! But we have a firm foundation--we stand on the promises given to us in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! You can't get any better DNA than that!

Here is the link!

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Last Sunday in worship I promised that I would show a very powerful video. Today, it was a part of my sermon. From what I could tell (and from what people said), it had a great impact on their lives as well. I wish that I could embed the video on this blog, but I can't. It is on God Tube.com and they don't yet allow that type of thing. So, below is the link to the site. Share the link with friends. There was a couple that came in to teach ballroom dancing. It is strange to see little boys that don't yet like little girls dancing with them. Another afternoon was spent with a man teaching the older kids how to play chess. For the rest of the summer, we had kids lined up to play chess during their spare time.

Kids playing chess surprised me. That requires a great deal of brain power because you have to try and figure out what your opponent is going to do in the long term. Also, you must be able to anticipate the outcomes of your move. If you do X, then what are the Y and Z's that your opponent will do.

In the same way, we as adults must consider the implications of all we do and say. None of us exist in a vacuum. Everything has implications and consequences. A few days ago, I was reading something that reminded me of that fact and it related to our beliefs about God. This was something I hadn't considered recently and had never really put it together in this way. Here is the revelation I had:

We live in a world that says there are many paths to God. Whether you think of them as spokes on a bike wheel or paths up a mountain, there are lots of ways to get from point A (where we are) to point B (God). Faith in the saving power of the resurrected Jesus Christ is just one of those ways. For liberal Christians, this is a part of their toleration mantra. Other faiths are equally valid so we need to learn about them so we can understand them and learn from them.

So, what this means is that the trip to God can be on paths A, B, C, D, E, etc. Now, let us say that path C is the path of Christ. Under this multiple path format, no one path is exclusive. Therefore, the path of Christ is just one of many ways you can get to heaven. From the human perspective, that doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. Most religions require a lot of their followers--some things (like prayer) are similar to the practices of Christianity. So, from the human perspective, the idea sounds good. [Can't we all just get along?]

But from God's perspective, there is a major problem. If, as traditional, orthodox Christianity believes, Jesus was God only begotten Son, then what happens with Jesus is a unique event. And the main "thing" that happens is the Crucifixion and resurrection. God allowed his Son to die on a cross so that we might be saved from eternal damnation. For a Father to allow His Son to die such a horrible death and not do something to stop it is child abuse (in human terms). If that death was necessary for the salvation of the world, then it is justified. It is a unique act that only Jesus could participate in and it is the unique way that we (humanity) are saved.

But if path C (Christ) is only one of a number of paths to salvation, then the cross was unnecessary. We didn't need Jesus and his death. We could follow paths A, B, D, E, etc. and still get to God. God needlessly allowed such a tragedy to occur. I don't know about you, but the God I worship is a loving God that wouldn't do such a thing.

For Christians to accept the multiple path concept is a bad move. It makes a joke of the cross and turns God into a child abuser.

Check mate!

Saving Grace - Everlast

We All Need Some "Saving Grace"

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I have watched the first couple of episodes of TNT's "Saving Grace". As long as the other person isn't hurting you, they are free (and encouraged) to do their own thing. And after you see others "doing their own thing" often enough, that "thing" becomes normal. You get used to it. And when others do something that isn't quite so outrageous, we are relieved.

Here is an economic example of what I am talking about. Last summer, on my vacation in Colorado, we went to Estes Park. I was mortified because the price of gas in that resort community was over $3.00 per gallon. Fast forward a year and you get to June/July of 2007. In Oklahoma, in the middle of a state built on the oil industry, we were paying over $3.00 per gallon for gas. And when my local station finally dropped the price back down to $2.89, I thought I was getting a bargain. I remember when my mother threw a fit because gas climbed over 50 cents--boy have times changed!!! There is a cartoon in today's paper (I think it is Blondie and Dagwood) where the most dangerous job in America is identified--it is the job of changing the price at the gas station!

As humans, pushing the envelop and expanding into new "stuff" is what we do. Be it technology or human behavior, we are surprised by change and innovation, but after a while, we become used to it. But what worries me is that God isn't human. God doesn't have standards that change every time the wind blows. We in America have so embraced toleration that sin no longer phases us. What was sin yesterday is normal acceptable behavior tomorrow. But that is for you and I--not for God. I pray that we learn to be tolerant, without abandoning our standards. God is depending on us to model the behavior that He expects from humanity. Heaven help us if we fail--but even more so if we never even try!

Enjoyed the Fireworks

www.ridgecrestumc.com

My family had an interesting night last night. Following the fireworks, we made our way through the crowd, out onto Mickey Mantle Drive and around to the 6 story parking garage that is next to the ball park. That was when the real fireworks began.

Ben (my oldest son) and I entered the parking garage at 10:30. Lu Ann stayed with the two younger ones at street level. I assumed that once I exited the garage, I would pick them up and we would head home. When Ben and I got to the car, we started it up and sat. About five minutes later, there had been no movement in the cars behind me, so I shut off the car and sent Ben down stairs. I walked over to the openings that look down onto Sheridan and got my front row seat for the real show.

The parking garage became one huge traffic jam. On the street, a parking attendant (I don't think he was an OKCPD officer, maybe a private security person) had blocked off Sheridan going East. All cars from the garage were being merged onto Sheridan going West. It was a huge mess. About every 5 minutes, two or three cars got to exit the garage. I watched one particular car that was on my level. It did not move a full car length in a one hour span. There was complete and total gridlock.

Sometime between 11:00 and 11:30, things in the garage took on a mean edge. People got out of their cars (not those in line, but the ones who couldn't even pull out to get in line), went to the openings and began to scream. They wanted the traffic guy to "free" those of us being held captive in the garage. People on the ground got into the issue and we were on the verge of a riot. At some time during that period, real police officers showed up and things improved a little bit. Cars were getting out quicker, but the line behind me didn't budge.

At about 11:30, the police and traffic attendant packed up and left. This meant that traffic could move both East and West on Sheridan, but those of us in the garage were at the mercy of regular traffic. Finally, at about 11:45, the line behind me started moving. I was finally able to get in my car, back out and get into the line. At 12:00, I pulled out of the building and picked up my family. Like a few thousand other OKC residents, I spend 1 1/2 hours in a traffic jam. Needless to say, I wasn't a happy camper. When I finally got to be first in line, I was glad to see that OKCPD had returned and were stopping East bound traffic to let us get out of the garage at a quicker pace.

Two things I learned from this. First, God has been helping me with patience. A few years ago, that type of situation would have driven me crazy and elevated my blood pressure to dangerous heights. God helped me to back off, relax and wait for the jam to clear. That was a great blessing. Second, I learned that pedestrians in Bricktown late at night have a death wish. They will step out in front of cars with no thought for their own safety. We need to be praying for their salvation because for some of them, it is highly probable that they will be meeting their maker in the very near future.

I hope that your 4th wasn't quite so eventful or stressful.

Jim

Great Expectations

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Yesterday, someone e-mailed me and asked if I had written anything in my blog (OK, actually, the e-mail was about something else, but they did add that to the end). So, now I have two faithful viewers who pester me if I don't write. OK, pester might be too strong a word. But sometimes a gentle reminder is all that is needed.

This writing "thing" is new to me. Yes, I know, I wrote a "book" when I got my degree. But writing an academic thesis is not the same as writing to a blog. This is much harder. I mean, the people who read this are people who I interact with every week. If I say something stupid (can someone with a doctorate say something stupid? Yes, they can!!!!), they will call me on it immediately. And then I have to look them in the eye. Blogging is like writing in a journal--only everyone and their dog has access to it. It is a little bit intemidating.

I think part of my problem is that of expectations. Because I am a minister, people (especially those silly people in my congregation) expect that I think lofty, spiritual thoughts all the time. I must confess--that isn't true! In fact, too often I spend my time thinking about the average, everyday stuff that you think about. Like what to eat for dinner or what to do with the family for the holiday. Even at work, the job is often about fixing the plumbing, dealing with the finances or getting the technical stuff ready for a PT spelling bee. God is in the background of all I do, but it is mostly just average, everyday stuff. Nothing too dramatic or spiritual--nothing that looks good on the blog!

So, I guess what I am saying is that you shouldn't expect too much from my blog. I won't write everyday...that is too much like work! And some of what I say will be more like Homer Simpson than Homer (the Greek poet). So, don't expect too much.

Have a great 4th of July--stay safe and stay close to Jesus!

Jim

Jesus - Bring The Rain - MercyMe

As I was writing the previous blog, I was also thinking about my sermon this Sunday on Ecclesiates 3...and it was raining. Seems like the last few months, the only time I have written to my blog is when it is time for me to send info for the church newsletter. Then, I write on the blog and use the same article on the blog. Not a good habit.

I am sitting at home at 5:30 in the am. I have had trouble sleeping the last few nights (early mornings). Lu Ann asked me what I was worried about and I told her that as far and I knew, I wasn't worried about anything. And that is true. I don't really have anything "big" that is on the worry radar. I guess I just have some free floating worries. For me, those are the little things that are floating around in my brain that I am not even aware of. For example, the kids from Project Transformation are singing in worship on Sunday. I pray that it goes well, but I'm not really worried about it. I know that a few faithful kids and their families will show up and they will do fine. But there are always the small details that could go wrong.

I guess what I need to do is spend some time in prayer. This is Wednesday morning, so I meet with my Streets of Shalom minister friends for prayer. I need it!!!! Maybe after a time of intense prayer, I can turn all of this free floating anxiety over to the Lord. And get a little more sleep each night. How about you? Do you have things in your life that you need to turn over to God? He is willing to help. All you have to do it ask.

Something to Pray About

www.ridgecrestumc.com

As you may or may not know, I am teaching a combined adult Sunday School class this summer. Since most of our classrooms are taken for Project Transformation, this allows us to continue to have adult education, without having to do major set up and tear down each week.

My class is studying the book Leadership in the Weslyan Spirit by Lovett Weems. Bishop Hayes has asked each church to have a small group study this book. I decided "Why not have most of our adults involved in the study?" So that is what we are doing. Weems looks at our history as United Methodists (the Methodist part, not the EUB part) and then contrasts that with what we are doing in UM churches today.

Last Sunday, the topic was demographics. Weems pointed out that Methodists followed population changes in America as we expanded westward. Since people lived in small towns and rural settings, that is where the Methodist church settled. Of course, there were city churches, but most of our churches were in the country. In the last 60 years, things have changed. During and shortly after WWII, the people moved to the cities. Then, with the white flight of the 50s and 60s, the shift began towards the suburbs. According to Weems, our nation is now 25% rural, 25% urban and 50% suburb.

The church has been effected by these changes. Rural churches struggle as the towns and areas they serve dwindle and decline. The suburbs have experienced tremendous growth and we can't build enough new churches to meet the demand. The city churches, like their rural counterparts, struggle. The large down town churches are OK, but changes in the community have had a devastating impact on smaller urban church. Yet as I look around in my neighborhood, there are no fewer people living here today as there have ever been. The issue isn't lack of people, it is our failure to properly connect with and minister with the people around us. And Ridgecrest is actually doing better than many other urban churches in our area.

The problem, as I see it, is that we don't really have a comprehensive, conference wide strategy for how to revitalize urban UM churches in Oklahoma. I have been given the task, by our Commission on Congregational Development, to head up a task force to develop just such a strategy/process. I am just in the stage of gathering the members of the task force, but there is one way you can help---pray!!!! Pray for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, that we might always be properly focused and in tune with the will of God in this matter. Pray that we might have the information that we need and that we might have the ability to use that information to craft a plan. But most of all, pray that we produce something that is effective. I don't want our labors to be for nought, nor do I want us to produce something that looks good on paper, but is all words and no action. Pray that God will show us the way to go...that we might more effectively make Disciples for Jesus Christ.

Word Left Unsaid

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Have you ever ended a conversation with a nagging feeling that you forgot something? Maybe you are talking with your spouse and that little voice inside your head keeps telling you that there is something you are supposed to remember to say. Maybe you took a phone call and there was an important message...but it has slipped out of your brain and all that remains is that little voice whispering a reminder.

Last Sunday, when I finished my sermon, that little voice was whispering (or yelling) at me. I preached on the story of Ananias and Sapphira from the Acts of the Apostles. Because we no longer hold all property in common or give all we have to the church, I tried to move the focus of my message to the fact that God knows all that is going on in our lives and expects us to act with integrity. When I finished, the little voice was whispering..."wasn't there something else you wanted to say?"

And this is what it was. While we don't hold everything in common and we don't give 100% of what we make to the church, we are called to be good stewards of what we have. Everything...100%...of what we have comes from God. He expects us to use our resources to further His kingdom and mission on this Earth. And, He expects us to return 10% off the top as a tithe to support the work of His church. That is part of being a good Steward, which is part of being a true Disciple of Jesus Christ. Don't ever forget that!

And while I'm thinking about "words not said," I am reminded that this Sunday is Mother's Day. If there is anything you need to say to your mother (or the mother of your children), make sure and say it. The same goes for your father, siblings or anyone else important in your life. Don't leave things unsaid thinking "I'll say that tomorrow." You don't know how many more tomorrows you will have. None of us knows what the future holds. Don't put off for tomorrow what needs to be done (and said) today. Just do/say it!

The Process of Perfecting

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Last week, I finished (at least I hope I finished) the process of perfecting my thesis. When I met with my committee for my defense, they had a list of corrections that needed to be made. On
Wednesday morning of last week, I retyped the last footnote and printed out a copy of the paper (no small feat, since it was over 150 pages long!). Then, for the next 4 hours, I went page by page, looking at the corrections that had been noted and then at the corrected copy, to make sure I didn't miss anything. And sure enough, I did. When I found a mistake, I had to come back to the computer, find the mistake, fix it and then reprint that page. It was a long, painstaking process--one I don't want to ever do again.

As Christian, our time on earth is just that--a process of perfecting. As United Methodist, we believe that all Christians are (or should be) moving on towards perfection. As a minister, when asked by Bishop Solomon whether I was going on towards perfection, I answered "yes." When asked if I expected to get there in this life, I answered "yes." Some people struggle with that concept. They don't see how anyone will ever, in this life, be perfect.

And we know that! As United Methodist, we know that none of us are or ever will be "perfect people." We all make mistakes and we all sin--whether we mean to or not. When we talk about "perfection", we are talking about the concept of being "perfected in Christian love." What we mean by that is that there will come a time in our lives when everything we do and say is motivated by love. Love will become the driving force pushing everything we do. When you get to that point, you are perfected. And between here and there, you are moving on toward perfection. Will we ever be perfect as the world defines perfect? No! But that doesn't change the fact that we are called to be perfected in Christian love.

For my paper, the process of perfection took about 4 hours. In our lives, the process may take 30, 40 or even 50 years. The issue isn't so much how quickly you get there but that you keep on keeping on--one foot in front of the other. One step at a time.

IT IS DONE!

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Sunday and Monday were great days for me. On Sunday, Reunion Weekend ended with a great worship celebration and a reception honoring of the former pastor of the church. Then on Monday, I finished typing my thesis for my doctoral program. I was finally able to heave a huge sigh of relief.

But of course, all the action didn't happen on Sunday/Monday. The last week or so has been a whirlwind of activity. The counter tops for the kitchen finally arrived on Thursday (yes, three days before the dinner). The plumbers were here on Friday to get them set up. The Friendship class came in to set up and decorate for the dinner on Friday evening. On Saturday, the Beacon class was in charge of the open house. The dinner went off without a hitch (though we didn't get as much meat as we were supposed to get. Sorry!!!!). Then we gathered in the sanctuary for a wonderful worship celebration. Bishop Bob Hayes preached and inspired us to remember the past and to be busy working to create a past that we can be proud of.

On Sunday morning, the Challenger's prepared a wonderful breakfast. The worship service was inspiring, with great music by the choir and the Mullins Family Singers. Then the Explorers did a good job of hosting the reception. All in all, it was a great event.

As you know, for about the last six weeks I have been working on writing my thesis. I finally got the last typing and corrections done on Monday. I'm not quite ready to mail it in yet. I am scheduled to defend it on Friday, April 13th (O Boy--Friday the 13th--I hadn't made that connection until now!!!!!). So, keep praying for me. But at least part of that burden is lifted.

The next two weeks, we remember another time when someone heaved a sign of relief (or pain) and said "It is finished!" This Sunday, we remember his triumphant entry into Jerusalem. On Thursday, we remember his last night on this earth. On Friday, we remember his painful death on a cross and we prepared for the sun to rise on Easter Sunday as we welcome the risen savior.

As we take a break from our weariness, let's not forget about the one who did the real work--the one who came to die on a cross for our sins. Remember and be thankful!

A New Update!!!!

www.ridgecrestumc.com

OK, OK! Someone who nags worse than my mother reminded me that I hadn't updated my update in a long time. I'm just joking about the nagging--I know that I haven't kept this up to date, but I have been incredibly busy.

I am writing this on Saturday at 5:45 am. I didn't sleep well. The next 36 hours will probably be some of the most hectic of my life.

So, here is the update. The kitchen at Ridgecrest is finally finished. We are missing one little counter top and a little bit of work is still to be done on the cabinets, but other than that, they are done. I will try to get some pictures taken and posted on the website. They didn't get the counter tops in until Thursday and the plumbing done until yesterday. So, the remodel came right down to the wire.

We have been working feverishly the last week getting ready for this weekends Reunion. We got it pretty much done. I still have a few little things to do this afternoon, but the church has not looked this good since I came here. We are ready for the dinner tonight. Bishop Hayes will be preaching. It will be a great evening, even if it will be stressful.

Tomorrow, we have a breakfast, worship and a reception. Piece of cake.

On my Doctoral Thesis. It is soooooo close to being finished. I have one little thing to type (the transcript of the last sermon--pretty short since most of the sermon was video). I need to finish corrections on three chapters. I need to work on footnotes and Bibliography. I need to print it, have copies run and mail it. I plan to work Sunday evening and early next week. Hope to be done by Tuesday and in the mail on Wednesday.

I am getting excited about the idea of graduating. I received a bill for my graduation fee. I received the instructions from the seminary (Brite) about the hooding ceremony--but I don't get my doctoral hood at that ceremony. I get it at the huge TCU graduation ceremony! I think this might actually happen!

Oh, well. That is enough of an update for now. Once the thesis is finished, I will get back to writing on a regular basis.

Be praying for me!

An Update

www.ridgecrestumc.com

In case you haven't noticed, I haven't posted much the last month. As you may or may not know, I am working on a Doctor of Ministry degree. I began the program many years ago. I completed all of my course work...and then stopped. I finally hit the dead line. I must do the project, write the thesis and get the degree--or, I lose it all. So, I am in the process of writing. I have finished two chapter (out of an expected seven), preached two of the three sermons and am on a roll. Until that gets done, other things (like blogging) are on hold.

The kitchen remodel at the church is going well. We have much of our stuff done. Now we are waiting on contractors (cabinet makers, counter top people, Heat/AC, sheet metal fabricators, etc.) Our target completion date is the end of February. We may not make it, but we are going to try. To see photos of the kitchen remodel, go to the church website.

I will write more when I have a chance.

Sunday Services Cancelled

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Due to icy conditions and the forecast for more ice/sleet and snow overnight, we are cancelling all Sunday activities at Ridgecrest UMC. Take my office, for example. I really need to do a thorough cleaning, but I can never get around to starting--it is such a big job, I'm not sure exactly where to begin--so I don't!

That isn't the case with our kitchen remodel. I was at the church on Saturday afternoon, preparing things for Sunday. I went into the hall way next to the kitchen and into fellowship hall, but I never looked in the kitchen. When I got to church on Sunday, someone asked if I had seen the kitchen. No....I hadn't. Why? Well, some little elf had come and removed the ceiling tile and grid. He came in on Saturday morning and did the work. I just didn't look into the kitchen on Saturday, so I missed it. But there it was (is). Exposed steel girders, wire and sheet metal. It looks very industrial--and no, it isn't going to stay that way. One of the very last projects will be to install a new grid system, drop in new light fixtures and put in the new tile. But, as of today (actually, as of Saturday), we can announce that the project has begun. I plan to take pictures as we go and post them on the Internet--so you can keep track of our progress (hopefully, not our lack of progress).

I guess I should take my cue from the kitchen project and just get started. Maybe you are like me; you have something in your life you need to be working on, but you keep putting it off. Let's make a pact to begin today...OK, maybe we can put it off until tomorrow, but let's get started.

What Would You Ask For?

www.ridgecrestumc.com

My Bible reading yesterday took me to the beginning of I Kings. I read how David placed his son Solomon onto the throne--and then went on to be with his ancestors. I read how Solomon took care of his adversaries. Then I read about the vision.

God appeared to Solomon in a dream. He offered Solomon one wish--anything he asked for would be granted. Solomon, being a young man, acknowledged that he really wasn't ready to rule a kingdom. So he asked for a discerning heart, that he might understand what it is that God wants for His kingdom on earth. God was pleased with this request. Rather than ask for wealth or power, Solomon asked for a trait of character that would make him a better ruler. God granted the request and then gave Solomon what he hadn't asked for--wealth and power.

This Biblical story hit me hard. Right now, we are three days before Christmas. The Malls are crowded with throngs of people looking for the "right" gift. Our economy rests on the wanton desires of people who want, want, want--and other's willingness to buy, buy, buy to fulfill those wants. In Biblical terms, we desire only wealth and power. Santa might be fine with it, but I believe that God would be disappointed.

O that we might be more like Solomon, whose only desire was to have a heart that recognized the will of God. When Christmas morning dawns, I pray that all of us--and specifically our church (Ridgecrest) will have a new heart. That in all we do, our heart will be in tune with God and our one and only desire will be to do His will.

Well Said

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I received a message from Rev. Dan Pulver, the North Oklahoma City District Superintendent today. Here is what it said:

I was just reading about a Superintendent in Nevada who was successfully turning churches in his district around. These are the things he's doing:

1. Find a group of people in the church who will commit to intentional intercessory prayer for the church. Pastor will give specific instruction on what to be praying for.

2. Fix worship. Make worship spirited and experiential.

3. Get the church to dream and get beyond themselves. Find a meaningful vision and mission.

4. Prepare the church for change: changing the underlying philosophy of the congregation. Usually this means moving them from a "scarcity" mentality toward an approach that asks God what God wants to see happen, and then trusting God for the means to do it.

5. Claim early successes to build momentum. If people see themselves succeeding in the small steps that lead to the future, they will trust to take bigger steps.

6. Develop ministries that connect with the greater community. (Many churches try this first instead of last, never having gone through the other steps, and they do not experience good results.)

When I finished reading this message, I responded back and told him that I agreed whole heartedly! This is exactly what we have been doing at Ridgecrest--and it is working!!!!! Pat youselves on the back and give praise to God.

Editing Life

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I am writing this on Tuesday morning. Monday was chaos at the church--it almost always is. Lots of "stuff" to finish up from Sunday. I was finally able to set down at the computer and work on the recording of the Choir Christmas Cantata. About a year ago, we started recording the service using an MP3 recorder. Because it is a little tricky to work, I am always concerned that we will not get a good recording. So, as I copied the file, I held my breathe to see if it recorded correctly--and it did!!! (The Cantata should be on the net within about a week)

Once the recording of the entire service is copied onto the computer, I then use an audio editing software to create the segments that I want to post on our website. Normally, I only copy the special music and sermon. But for the Cantata, it was all special.

Now, in case you weren't here on Sunday, you should know that I made a boo-boo. I misread my bulletin and stood up to do the offering--one song too early! As always, I made a joke out of it and went on. Of course, it didn't help that Rev. Dan Pulver, the District Superintendent (read "My Boss") was in the congregation. But anyway, I proved once again that I'm just like everyone else. I (we) are human and make mistakes.

If you listen to the Cantata on the Internet, you will not know that I messed up. You see, when I went to edit the recording, I just eliminated the part where I goofed. Not only did I get rid of the part where I spoke too early, but I also eliminated the reference I made to it when it was time to take the offering. All I had to do was highlight those sections, click on the right mouse button and then click on "CUT". And that was it. Mistake gone.

Wouldn't it be nice if life was like that. If when you made a mistake, all you had to do was click a few buttons and the mistake would disappear--as if it never happened. Of course, in one way, it does. When we make the big mistakes--what we refer to as sin--and confess to God, asking for forgiveness, they are gone. The Bible says that they are cast as far away from us as if they were sunk in the deepest part of the deepest ocean. That's how the blood of Christ works. Because of the work on the cross, our sins are washed away, as if they never existed.

But things don't work that way with our fellow humans. The mistakes we make sometimes hurt other people. There is nothing we can say--no button you can push--to make them go away. Wounds can heal, over time. But there is almost always a scar. While this is a time of great joy for many, the Christmas season is also a time of pain for some. Families come together, even the parts that don't get along. Past events get replayed and old wounds get reopened.

Yesterday, someone was in my office who talked with me about a friend who was recently diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer. This friend was fairly young--only about 60. She had planned to retire at 62 and write a book--something she may not get the opportunity to start or finish. One of the lessons learned: Don't put it off! Start writing that book today!

I would say the same for you, this holiday season. If there are things that need to be said-- wounds that need to be mended--then say them. Don't put it off until 2007 because you just don't think it is the right time. There may never be a right time. Today is the only thing that is certain. Tomorrow--the future--is only a possibility. During this season, reach out and say "I Love You" to someone that needs to hear it from you. And remember to pray for all those who are hurting and grieving this season. The Christ Child comes especially for those who are in need. Pray that they might experience healing as they stand in the miraculous light of the guiding star and kneel at the manger. Worship Christ the Newborn King!

Somethin' Is Cookin' in the Kitchen

www.ridgecrestumc.com

The Trustees met last night and made the final decisions for kitchen remodel. Here is what is going to happen.

1. The kitchen will be completed gutted. The pantry on the South wall (the one with the bi-fold doors where we store our paper products) will come out. This is not the Mobile Meals pantry. The ceiling will come down, the appliances will come out, the floor will come up. It will just be bare walls.

2. The floor will be different from a normal floor. It will be a poured epoxy resin with quartz stone added for texture and color. It will have the texture of an orange peel and will be a light brown in color with some grey. It will be not skid/non slip.

3. The layout of the kitchen will be basically the same, except that the refrigerator, freezer, coffee cart and, perhaps, a hot box will go into the alcove that is now the pantry (where paper goods are stored). On the wall where the fridge now sits will be floor to ceiling, wall to wall pantry cabinets. There will be a small dish pass through window on the wall where the sinks are located and there will be a commercial grade dishwasher under that counter.

4. All the cabinets will be custom wood stained fruitwood. All counter tops will be custom stainless steel with a small rolled edge to contain spills and keep things from rolling off of the counter top. The counter tops in the center of the room and where the sinks/dishwasher will be will be divided into three units. The "T" is the current food prep counter and the serving counter. Those will be separate units and will be on casters. This will allow us to move them around in the kitchen for cleaning. Also, the top of the "T" (the serving counter) could be rolled out into the Fellowship Hall to use for serving. They probably won't move around a lot, but it will provide us with that ability. All other cabinets, including the pantry, will be off the ground on stainless steel legs, to insure that they don't get wet. Also, it will allow us to clean under them, on occasion.

5. There will be a new refrigerator and freezer (stainless steel, commercial grade). Also, there will be a stainless steel microwave oven, mounted under a cabinet that will hang next to the stove. Under the microwave, between the stove and pantry cabinet, will be a stainless steel counter top, open underneath for parking of rolling cart(s). We are keeping our current stove, but do plan to do some work on it, perhaps to add an electronic ignition on the ovens.

6. The ceiling will be raised about 7 inches. The new drop down ceiling will be 2' X 2', instead of the 2' X 4' --which is how most of the ceilings are done. The tiles will have a bevelled edge that will allow them to set down in the grid (a more decorative look). The lights will be the standard lay in fluorescence four feet long (2' X 2' U tube lights are available, but tubes are pretty expensive to replace). We are going to keep the same ceiling fans and don't plan to clean off any of the dust or dirt. Just kidding!!! We will have new ceiling fans as well.

Well, that's about it. We will begin demo on Friday, Dec. 29. Most of the work on the remodel will be done by contractors. But demo is the one major thing that we are doing. So, if you want to help tear out the kitchen, plan to be here early on Friday. We will probably still be working on Saturday, so plan to come then as well.

Did you miss it?

www.ridgecrestumc.com

Christmas is about children. It is about God, in the form of the Son, coming to earth as a newborn infant. It is about the look in a small child's eyes when they see the Christmas tree all lit up, with presents scattered around under the tree.

Last Sunday night we had our Children's Christmas Celebration at Ridgecrest. If you weren't there, then you missed a great night. We had lots of kids who shared their musical ability with us, by singing the time honored carols of the season. Then, all the children in the audience (at least those old enough to participate) played a part in our Nativity drama. We heard the Christmas story, as told in scripture, and finished with a living Nativity scene, filled with angels, shepherds, the wise persons, Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus (a blond haired, blue eyed doll that isn't anywhere close to accurate, but does the job).

Not only were there lots of kids who performed/participated, but the audience was also full of younger kids who are a year or two away from singing themselves. I was at the back of the sanctuary for the singing part of the celebration. When Ginny brought Sam to the back, he came to me to let me hold him. It's been about 7 years since my little ones where holding age, so I relished that time (and Buck was a little jealous that I was stealing his little man).

I believe that at the Children's Christmas Celebration, we experienced the hope of Ridgecrest. We have lots of young adults with kids. They are the present hope and future promise of what Ridgecrest will be. Like a child who sleeps restlessly on Christmas Eve, I have visions of Sugar Plums (or of a growing, thriving church) dancing in my head. I can't wait for tomorrow to come, so that I can experience the reality of the Christ Child born anew in the world--and His church (Ridgecrest), committed to His mission--to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

It Is a Small World, After All

www.ridgecrestumc.com

When I came into the office on Sunday morning, I discovered that there was a phone message from a local funeral home. Gladys Watters, a member of the church who was 98 years young, had passed away. The family wanted me to conduct the funeral service on Tuesday afternoon. I contacted Gladys' niece later on Sunday and made arrangements to meet with them on Monday afternoon.

When I got to the home, I sat down with Connie and Ralph (Gladys' niece and her husband). They told me about Gladys and her life, since I really didn't know much about her. She had a stroke 11 years ago and Connie and Ralph were able to come and live with her so that she wouldn't have to go into a nursing home. As a part of that discussion, Ralph commented that he worked in the oil industry.

Connie left the room for a few minutes and so I tried to make conversation with Ralph. I asked what he did in the oil industry and he told me. I said that my family had been in the oil business and that I was born in Hobbs, NM. He said, "I was born in Hobbs, to." I expressed surprise and told him that my dad had owned an engine repair business called "Hills Engine" and asked if he knew of it. He then said, "Do you know Bobby Hall?" Well, Bobby is my brother (well, technically half brother, but who is counting?). It wound up that Ralph is a very good friend and customer of my brother. He had lunch with Bobby a few weeks ago and talks to Bobby on a regular basis. When I left the house, I called my brother to let him know. He was blown away!

What I was reminded of is how interconnected we all are. Our families and friends don't live in a vacuum. They have families and friends--and so forth, down the line. And in many cases, those connections ultimately circle back around and you randomly meet a good friend of your brother--a friend that you didn't know existed (especially living in the home of one of your church members). Because of the interconnectedness of our lives, we have an unbelievable opportunity to influence (positively, I hope) the lives of others. The fabric of our relationships is like a spider's web. If anything lands in the web, the spider knows about it because of the vibrations that move out across the web. When we influence some one's life--by helping them or offering them comfort during a time of need--we set off vibrations throughout their web of family and friends. When we minister in the name of Jesus Christ, it is like a rock thrown into a pond. The affects are seen beyond where the rock lands--they move out in ripples to affect the entire pond.

Why don't you work to make some ripples today--in the name of the Christ Child!

Humpty Dumpty

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I have had a couple of days of excitement on the road. Yesterday, I pulled up to the corner of NW 39th and Meridian (going north on Meridian). A car pulled up into the lane on my left, which is the left turn lane. About 3 seconds later, the car turned right across my lane and the lane to my right and began traveling east on 39th. The driver to my right look at me--I looked at him--and we both shrugged. There is sometimes no logic to what people do.

This morning, I went to the grocery store. As I was leaving the parking lot, I got distracted. I looked right but failed to look left--and as I pulled out, I discovered that there was a car coming towards me from the left. I thank God that the driver of the other car was going slowly and paying good attention. She was able to stop (with a strong blast on the horn), so there wasn't an accident. I shrugged and tried to show that I was sorry for the problem (I wish there was a universal sign for "sorry").

As my life flashed before my eyes, I was reminded how fragile this life is. The person who made a right turn from the left turn lane--that person could have lost their life. And pulling out of that parking lot, I could have faced the end. Every day, we go about our lives thinking that we are safe. But that is simply an illusion. Any of us could be facing our final hour, without knowing it. And we need to live that out in our lives. We should live as if this is the last hour we have. Anything that needs to be done or said need to be taken care of. During this special holiday season, I would challenge everyone to take care of unfinished business.

Remember, Humpty Dumpty was on the wall one minute and one the ground the next--without a moments notice. You may not receive any either. So.....git-r-done!

What/who do you worship?

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I haven't written much this week. I think it is a case of either not much to write about or too busy to pull my thoughts together and put them on the electronic paper.

I had an encounter with a pastor of another Methodist church this week. This person was very frustrated with their congregation. They were in the process of remodeling their sanctuary and the people (or at least a few vocal leaders) have voiced the concern that those kids (the 20 or so kids that ride the bus to church on Sunday morning, without an adult with them in worship) will tear up the upholstery on the new pews. They are more concerned about the quality of the seats than they are about the quality of the lives of those 20 or so kids who need to hear about the Gospel of Jesus.

At the same time, this church was approached by a non-profit that wanted to lease space from them to operate a Christian pre-school program. They would have about 80 kids in the building every weekday (and their parents, when they drop them off and pick them up). What a great opportunity to impact the lives of a huge number of families. And it would cost the church nothing. In fact, they would receive rent and utility assistance. But some leaders of the church don't want to do it, because the rooms they would need are used for Sunday School and they might mess them up.

We sing a song that says "The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple, the church is not a resting place, the church is the people". Some people haven't learned that yet. Some people have put their building in the place of God. They worship the bricks and mortar, rather than worshipping the One who can build something that really matters. I pray that as we remodel our kitchen and, perhaps do some other much needed remodeling, we don't fall into the same trap. We improve the building to make it more comfortable and enjoyable so that we can better attract those who need to hear the Gospel.

Please be praying for this other pastor. He is frustrated and needs a word of encouragement from the Lord. And remember:

It is all about making disciples for Jesus!

Location, Location, Location

www.ridgecrestumc.com

The last five days have been soooooooo strange. Snowed/iced in for two solid days is almost surreal. I actually slept in on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (until 10:00 one day). I am normally up and going at 5:30...yes, that's correct, I said 5:30 am!!!!

I was very impressed with the Ridgecrest family yesterday (Sunday, Dec. 3rd). I expected our attendance to be way down. But we had 72 (about normal) in Sunday School and 103 in worship (just a few less than average). As bad as the north parking lot was (ice), I am impressed by the family's commitment to God and worship.

When I got to the church this morning, I had an unusual job ahead of me. I decided to move all of the plants from the hall way (next to the office door) into one of the offices up stairs. While the big window by the office door provided a lot of light, the cold temperatures (especially when the office door opens) were hurting the plants. Hopefully, up stairs in a warm room with lots of sun, the plants will bounce back.

As I was lugging the plants up the stairs, it hit me that we are kind of like the plants. We can get plenty of sun (or Son) and lots of water (the Word), but if we are in the wrong location or climate, we won't thrive. We need to be surrounded by warm, caring people who will love us into health, wellness and spiritual growth. I pray that Ridgecrest will always be a place of warm, caring, friendly people. If the climate ever turns cold, we will all die! I have heard recently about a number of people who won't come to church (any church) because of the wounds and abuse they received from a church experience. I encourage you to insure that we aren't a family of faith that turns our back on anyone--visitor or member--or is rude or cold. We are seeing lots and lots of visitors each week. And many of them come back. The major reason they give is that the people are genuinely loving and caring. The church--the people, not the building--is a place they feel comfortable and loved. Don't ever let that change.

The Nativity

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I heard a story on the news that caught my attention. I only heard the very end of it, so I went on the web to make sure what I heard was correct. Sure enough, it was.

On Tuesday, it was reported that the City of Chicago had pressured a German Chamber of Commerce to reject the movie "The Nativity" as a sponsor of their Christmas market in Daley Plaza. The movie was paying to be a sponsor of the market. In return, there would be posters of the movie on display, fliers for the movie handed out and trailers for the film would play on TV's at the market. All of this would be side by side with all the other advertisements used to promote sponsors of the event. The City of Chicago said that their request was to insure that no one thought the city was endorsing or promoting one religion over another. In the plaza, they have a Nativity scene, along side symbols from other religions.

This is it. A city has now decided that a Christmas event can't show a depiction of the Christmas event. How can the German Chamber of Commerce have a "Christmas" market if someone is going to be offended that they mention Christmas. Is the city going to require them to rename it a holiday market? It wouldn't surprise me. But the funny thing is this: New Line Cinema was going to pay $12,000 for the sponsorship. They received their money back--and received national/international publicity worth far more than $12,000. Thanks, City of Chicago. And estimates are that up to one million Christians in the Chicago area may go to see The Nativity. I hope that those people who might have been offended by the movies sponsorship won't be offended by how much business the movie does---O, I'm sorry, I actually don't care if they are offended. In fact, I hope they are offended. I'm tired of it being OK to offend Christians, but not OK to offend everyone else. It is time that followers of Christ stand up for our rights and show that we are proud of our faith. JUST DO IT!!!!

Kind Of Strange

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I am writing this from home, sitting at my laptop, in the early afternoon. Like pretty much everyone else in Oklahoma City, I am iced in. The big storm dumped a sheet of ice on the roads and is now covering that with a thick layer of snow. On Monday, the temperature was in the 60's--now we are locked in an ice box. Nature/weather is never boring.

One of the bad things about being stuck at home is that I can't get the church work done that is supposed to be done on Thursday. At the office, we have a schedule. On Thursday, we run and fold the bulletin and get the slides on the computer in the balcony. I guess that will happen either on Friday or Saturday.

I don't know if anyone who has read this blog has noticed, but the page has evolved. It started out with a black background and is now light. The reason for the change is that I have gotten feedback from friends that make suggestions about how to improve the blog. Some refer to aesthetic issues--how the page looks and how easy it is to read. Others relate to security issues--if you want to post a comment, you have to read a weird word and type it in the box (to keep computer generated spam from being loaded into the blog). Also, any comments will come to my e-mail address and I will have to approve them before they can be posted.

The small changes remind me of the way we do ministry at Ridgecrest. We pray and ask God what to do. Once we feel that God has pointed us in a specific way, we take off. But, we don't always get where we want to go without making course corrections. It is like sailing a ship. You don't actually sail directly for a destination. Instead, you tack; you head in the general direction you want to go, then change course to correct you line. You wind up traveling in a zig zag pattern that gets you where you need to be. As we do ministry, we make small corrections as we go along, to help make sure we are on track. We are not afraid of change--we embrace it as necessary to fulfilling our God given mission: To Make Disciples for Christ!

It's About Time!

www.ridgecrestumc.com

It wasn't supposed to hit until noon, but the Great Northerly appears to have roared into town at about 8:00 this morning. I stood outside for just a few minutes, with my heavy coat on, at about 10:00 and nearly froze to death. And while I'm not sure I am ready for the howling, biting wind--I am ready for winter to be here.

This Sunday is the first week of Advent. Advent is the season when we prepare for the birth of the Christ child. With Christmas just around the corner, I am ready for a little winter weather. I don't know how people in tropical climates celebrate Christmas--I guess they do it with a tan. But for me, I don't mind seeing a little of the white stuff. How can you dream of a white Christmas if you don't see any white?

I was excited last Sunday. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is traditionally down a little in terms of attendance. But we had over 120 in worship--that's about 10 above normal. And of those 120, about 17 were visitors. I believe that we are seeing God working in the life of our congregation. I think that this Sunday we will have someone joining the church by profession of faith (assuming that things don't change). This will be 3 weeks out of 4 that we have had someone joining the church. If you or someone you know is thinking about joining our family of faith, this would be a great time to take the plunge.

At my pastor's prayer meeting, we discussed our individual prayer times. Like many of my pastor friends, I have difficulty blocking out time for dedicated prayer. I am committing to being more intentional about a scheduled prayer time. I don't know if you have the same problem--but if you do, there is no better time than now to start a good habit.

Our good friends at Covenant Life Church are providing Christmas Food boxes for families in the Whiz Kids program (many are the same families we deal with in PT). If you would like to purchase a Heartland Share box for a Whiz Kids family, let Linda know. CLC will deliver them for us. The price is $23.00 per box.

Prayer Update:
In case you missed Mark's comment, Joyce is doing a little better. Also, received word that Maxine appears to be doing better and Carol is home after surgery. Also, Ian got good results from his tests and David (the 20 something young man with cancer) is doing better. Thank the Lord for healing.

Be in prayer for Jackie, the sister of Maureen. She has been diagnosed with a large tumor in her brain. They are still running tests to decide if they can do surgery. Pray that healing might come, in what ever way possible. Also, pray for the family. Losing a sibling is very difficult. Maureen definitely needs our prayers.

Let Us Pray

www.ridgecrestumc.com

I was at Oklahoma City Hall bright and early this morning to deliver the invocation for the City Council Meeting. Here is an approximate text of what I prayed:

Most Holy God, we bow our heads in praise and thanksgiving to You. We thank you for the blessings you give us each day. We thank you for the place your have put us--for the City of Oklahoma City--and for the blessings you have rained down upon our city. We thank you for new businesses that have relocated or open. We thank you for jobs that have been created. We thank you for buildings and homes that have been built. We thank you for the increasing level of prosperity that our city has received.

Yet at the same time, O God, we recognize that all have not shared in the blessing. While there are new jobs, there are still those that can't find work and those who must work two jobs just to make ends meet. While there are new homes, we recognize that there are those who have no place to call home, who live on the streets or in a shelter. While the city is more prosperous, we know that there are still those who struggle every day to make it. And while the city is more prosperous and we live in the greatest nation in the world, we are ashamed that there are children in our city who go to bed hungry. As these, you servants, O Lord, deliberate and do the business of the city, help them to hold these two contrasting realities in their hearts.

O God, you anoint those in leadership. When the people of Israel cried out for the king, you anointed first Saul and then David to be their king. I pray, O God, that you might send your Ruach/Holy Spirit to anoint these men and women once again--that they might feel your guidance and direction. As they deliberate, help them to remember that it isn't about their interests or the interests of a select few--but it is about "What is in the best interest for the people of Oklahoma City". Bless their decisions, that they might be within your will. That as decisions are made by those elected and carried out by the staff assigned to do that job, that our city might be made into a place of Shalom--of your peace. For it is in your glorious and mighty name we pray. Amen

After I finished praying, Willa Johnson (one of the city council persons), came out meet me. She said that my prayer was "The best prayer that she had ever heard"--I bet she says that to all the ministers who pray. (Ha, Ha!) I'm just pleased that someone, other than God, was actually listening. But who am I to say. Maybe everyone there was listening and praying along with me. That would be my hope.

As I drove around down town looking for the parking lot and then as I left, I was struck by the number of homeless who are shuffling around on the streets. And I am reminded that the forecast for Wednesday night through at least Friday calls for very cold night time temperatures. I call on you to pray for all those living on the streets, that they might be protected from the danger of subfreezing nights.

When I got to the Mayor's office, I asked his assistant how I was chosen. He said that they go through the Yellow Pages and select pastors from churches in different Wards and from different denominations. I said, "You through a dart at the map and see where it sticks." He said it isn't quite that random, but some what. They took a picture of me with the Mayor. I am supposed to get a signed copy in the mail. When it arrives, I will scan it and put it on the web site, so that you can relish in my celebrity status (Ha, Ha!) The Mayor said that he had been on Reid Mullin's show this morning and Reid had mentioned that I was going to be praying at the meeting. With all this publicity, I may have to hire an agent.

When the officials walked in, the lights came up--that's correct, TV lights. And then I looked up and saw that there was a camera looking down on the podium where I would be standing. If any of you were watching, I hope that you weren't blinded by the lights reflecting off of the top of my head. I don't know about you, but I don't really see myself as a TV evangelist. To do that, I think God would need to bless me with the miracle of new hair--and I don't really think it is going to happen.

Well, I have to get busy. The work of the kingdom never ceases.

Yours in Christ,

Jim

New Beginnings

After reading a story in the local paper, I decided it was time for me to jump into the realm of the blog. My goal is to use this space, on a daily basis, to organize the professional events in my life and the random thoughts that come as a result of those events. I have promised myself that my family is off limits on this blog. They are in the public eye enough, what with me having a pulpit every Sunday. So, if anyone actually reads this, make sure and help me keep that promise.

Tomorrow will be a little different for me. I have been invited to give the invocation for the Oklahoma City Council Meeting. I'm not sure why I was chosen, but I look forward to the opportunity. I have great respect for the men and women who have been elected to lead our city. We are making great strides, but much is still left to be done. As I pray, I will ask God to be with the leaders and help keep them focused on their true job--to act in the best interest of the people of the city. May God help me and them!

Devotions: Every day I read a couple of different devotional books. Every now and then, I may comment on them. One is an historical devotion. It tells about something that happened in history on this day and then creates a devotion from that event. The second a general devotional book aimed at men.

Today, November 27, in 1095 AD, at the Council of Clermont, Pope Urban II preached the most persuasive sermon ever preached. He noted the damage and destruction that the Turks had brought to Jerusalem and called on the military leaders present to make things right, in the name of Christ. He promised direct passage to heaven to any who died in the fight and assured his hearers that it was God's will that the Turks be expelled. As a result of this sermon, the crusades began. The second reading for today noted that in Acts 17, Paul and Silas were in Berea. As they taught and preached, the learned men went to scripture to see if what they preached/taught was true. Wouldn't the world be better off if those at Clermont had been learned men of faith, who went to scripture to see if Urban was speaking truth. Nations may go to war and, in limited instances, may be justified in doing so. But for the church of wage war in the name of Christ, except in a spiritual sense, is contrary to scripture and the teachings of our Lord and Savior.
